Ancient Roman bronze ring with an eye-shaped bezel, decorated with a stylised vine or foliage motif. Wide shoulders and tapering ring band with a small knob in the center of the ring band.

-> In Roman symbolism vegetal ornamentation was often associated with themes of fertility, abundance, and prosperity. Vine motifs in particular could evoke the symbolism of growth and vitality connected with nature and agriculture. The combination of an eye-shaped bezel (ward off evil) with such imagery may therefore have carried a protective or auspicious meaning.

-> The belief in the 'Evil Eye' dates back about 5.000 years and is present in many ancient cultures around the Mediterranean area. They are used as an amulet or talisman to ward off the evil eye. The staring eyes are supposed to reflect the malicious gaze back to the sorcerer.
