Ancient Roman Republic - Early Empire period Gladius Hispaniensis (Hispanicus) iron sword with rare inlays.
Attributed to a high ranking individual serving with the Roman military during the late republic - early empire period of 100 BC - 50 AD.
The rare inlays "(V)TERE FELIX" (use with fortune) & twin sun symbol (swastika form) indicate that this was not a weapon of the common soldier, rather a Legate or Tribune.
Very well preserved and a former piece of the Antony Cribb collection (antique weapons expert for Bonhams, Sworders)
The sword has a 50cm long double edges blade with the distinctive waited design and armour piercing tip.
A note of provenance will be supplied with this piece.
