Kawara 瓦片 - 极其罕见的以瓦片制成的惠比寿像,年代为公元136年 - Meiji period (1868-1912)

This is an Meiji period statue of Ebisu, dated Meiji 明治 23年 August (1890), approximately 136 years old. The reverse side bears carved inscriptions reading: “Meiji 明治 23年 Hachigatsu 8月 (August) ” A particularly notable feature of this piece is that it is made of roof tile clay. During the Edo period, decorative architectural techniques for temples and shrines advanced significantly, and skilled tile craftsmen developed sophisticated sculptural techniques. As a result, auspicious and devotional objects were sometimes produced using the same tile-making methods. By the late Edo period, the Seven Lucky Gods belief had become deeply rooted in popular culture. Ebisu was widely worshipped as the deity of prosperity, commerce, and good fortune. During this time, auspicious decorative objects were highly sought after by merchants as well as religious institutions. Given these historical and cultural contexts, this statue is considered an early example from the period when Ebisu figures became widely established as decorative and devotional objects. Ebisu statues with a clearly dated inscription and made of tile material are extremely rare and hold significant historical and collectible value. ''Ebisu fishing for sea bream'' is a symbol that appears in Japanese traditional culture and beliefs. Ebisu is one of the Seven Lucky Gods, revered as a deity bringing prosperity and good fortune.
