The scarab was the manifestation of the god Jepri (the rising sun), symbolizing regeneration, rebirth, and protection. In life, it was used as a good luck charm and to attract abundance. In death, it was essential in the grave goods. It was placed on the chest of the deceased or between the bandages of the mummy to ensure that the heart of the deceased would be weighed favorably in the final judgment before Osiris.
The horizontal lines on the left usually correspond to the “djed” sign (stability) or are a stylized representation of a throne. The central figure resembles a seated deity or a representation of the monarch, which was common to invoke divine protection. In the Late Period, this combination is often translated as a request for stability and eternal life granted by the deity.
Provenance: Private property D.M., Bavaria, before 2007; acquired at auction Gorny & Mosch, Germany, 2025.
