The djed amulet is an ancient Egyptian protective charm in the form of a stylised pillar, a motif interpreted as the "backbone" of the god Osiris and a symbol of stability, endurance and resurrection. Commonly produced in glazed composition, gold, stone or other materials and worn on necklaces or placed among mummy wrappings, the djed featured prominently in funerary equipment from the New Kingdom onwards and was associated with rituals intended to "raise" the djed, restoring the integrity of the deceased body and ensuring safe rebirth in the afterlife.
Cf. W. M. F. Petrie, Amulets, Plate III.
Dimensions: 3 IN 1 SET UP TO 2cm x 0,8cm x 0,3cm
Provenance: Private European Collection; formerly acquired from old UK and European collection formed since the 1970s.
