The EF510-500 was introduced as a dedicated locomotive for hauling the famous sleeper limited express “Hokutosei.” It features a deep blue body with gold lining and the distinctive shooting-star emblem associated with the Hokutosei service. Replacing the older EF81 locomotives, the EF510-500 became one of the final iconic locomotives used for the Hokutosei before the end of Japan’s classic overnight sleeper train era. When paired with 24-series sleeper coaches, this locomotive allows the recreation of the classic Hokutosei overnight express formation. It is suitable for both layout operation and display purposes.
