罕见的清酒壶,带瓷盖 - 铁(铸), 银, 瓷 - Nishimura Dôya III 西村道也 (active 1678–1730) - 日本 - Mid Edo period
A rustic yet very elegant cast iron chôshi 銚子 (sake kettle) with a porcelain lid, attributed to Nishimura Dôya III 西村道也 (active 1678–1736).
The body is shaped in a form reminiscent of Mount Fuji, with a broad, slightly overhanging rim and raised on three low feet. The shoulder is decorated with characters in low relief: 烹雪対焼寒 (hôsetsu taishô kan); a poetic classical Chinese phrase meaning something like "boil the snow and drink tea from it to warm oneself in the cold".
The rim is further adorned with a continuous meander pattern.
The kettle is surmounted by a rare white porcelain lid, decorated in underglaze blue with insects among grapevines. The lid is fitted with a silver knob with traces of gilding. A fixed loop handle arches above the body.
Nishimura Dōya III 西村道也 was an Edo-period kettle maker active in Kyôto, working in the Sanjô Kamaza district. He is considered the third-generation head of the Nishimura lineage, closely associated with the Omotesenke tea school, and active during the time of the 6th master Gensô Sôsa 原叟宗左 (1678–1730). His works are known for their textured surfaces and refined yet expressive finishes.
Complete with the original signed and sealed wooden tomobako 共箱 (storage box), inscribed on the interior of the lid.
