【About the Artist: Shoraku Sasaki (Shoraku-gama Kiln)】
Shoraku Sasaki (佐々木彰楽) is a skilled artisan associated with the prestigious Shoraku-gama (松楽窯) in Kyoto. The kiln was originally established in 1905 near the famous Kiyomizu-dera Temple and later moved to Kameoka, Kyoto, in 1944.
The Shoraku lineage is highly respected in the world of the Japanese Tea Ceremony (Chanoyu), specifically known for their exceptional ability to create "Utsushi" (faithful recreations) of historical masterpieces by masters like Chojiro and Hon’ami Koetsu.
【Style & Technique】
This Aka-Raku (Red Raku) piece showcases the signature style of the Shoraku kiln:
Hand-molded (Te-neiri): Unlike most pottery made on a wheel, Raku bowls are shaped by hand and spatula, giving each piece a unique, organic warmth that fits perfectly in the palms.
Low-fire Glazing: Fired at a relatively low temperature, the clay remains porous and soft, providing excellent heat insulation for Matcha tea.
The "Fu" Aesthetic: The striking black fire-markings ("Fu") across the reddish glaze are a hallmark of Shoraku’s work. These are unpredictable "scars" from the kiln, highly valued as an expression of Wabi-Sabi—the beauty of imperfection.
