Blue and White Kraak Porcelain Dish with Deer
Wanli period (1573–1619), circa 1600, reign of the Wanli Emperor, China
A finely painted blue and white Kraak porcelain dish from the Wanli period, dating to circa 1600.
The dish has rounded sides rising from a short, tapering foot to a broad, everted flaring rim, characteristic of late Ming export wares. The interior is decorated with a central medallion enclosing a pair of deer in a landscape setting, symbolizing longevity and prosperity. The medallion is encircled by radiating lotus-lappet panels at the well and rim, each filled with flowers, birds, and fruit motifs, executed in lively underglaze cobalt blue. The structured panel design and rhythmic ornamentation are typical features of Kraak porcelain produced for overseas markets around 1600.
