Crafted from bent wood with a warm, rich patina, this piece combines practical function with strong decorative appeal. The container features a domed lid with hand-painted figural decoration in traditional style, a fitted internal compartment, and a shaped carrying handle with metal fittings. Objects of this type were widely used in Asia for carrying food during travel or work, and examples of this scale are less commonly encountered. The domed lid is decorated with a hand-painted scene depicting figures in traditional attire, rendered in a stylised manner typical of Chinese export wares from the early 20th century. The composition, framed within a shaped border, reflects popular narrative or genre motifs inspired by everyday life and theatre. The decoration shows visible wear and craquelure consistent with age, which enhances the antique character of the piece while remaining clearly legible. Despite its generous size of approximately 55 cm in height, the construction is relatively lightweight, making it easy to handle and display. Condition is good for its age, with visible signs of use.
