Item Description
This exquisite hanging scroll depicts the auspicious theme of "Takasago," a classical Japanese motif symbolizing marital harmony, longevity, and good fortune. The composition features an elderly monk and his attendant standing beneath a magnificent pine tree on a sandy shore, with a warm sun or moon glowing in the sky above.
The pine tree, masterfully rendered with delicate brushwork, extends gracefully across the upper portion of the scroll. Its branches are adorned with finely detailed pine needles accented in subtle blue-green tones, demonstrating the artist's skilled command of traditional Japanese painting techniques. Two elegant cranes soar through the sky, representing longevity and marital fidelity, while two turtles rest on the shore below, symbols of wisdom, endurance, and long life.
The central figure, an elderly monk dressed in a golden-yellow robe with turquoise patterned inner garments, carries a traditional fly whisk over his shoulder and holds a fan, embodying serene Buddhist contemplation. His white beard and gentle expression convey wisdom and tranquility. Behind him stands an attendant in a green and gold kimono, bearing a sword, suggesting protection and devotion.
This work is executed on silk using mineral pigments and ink in the traditional nihonga style. The mounting features rich golden-brown silk brocade with an elegant pattern, complemented by a decorative border with delicate floral motifs in gold. The painting is signed "Nakamura Kaho" with the artist's red seal.
The scroll comes with its original wooden storage box (tomobako) inscribed "Takasago" and signed "Nakamura Kaho" with seal, authenticating this as a genuine work. The Takasago theme, combining auspicious symbols of pine (eternity), cranes (felicity and longevity), turtles (longevity and wisdom), and celestial light (vitality), makes this scroll especially appropriate for celebratory occasions, weddings, New Year displays, or as a symbol of wishes for long life, prosperity, and marital harmony.
