【Product details】
This elegant Showa period lacquer box is a refined Japanese writing box, also suitable as a document box, distinguished by its radiant gold exterior and beautifully balanced composition.
The lid is decorated with blossoming plum branches and a pair of bush warblers, a classic auspicious motif associated with the arrival of spring. Plum blossoms symbolise perseverance, renewal, and hope, as they bloom while winter still lingers, while bush warblers are cherished as harbingers of spring and are associated with vitality, happiness, and seasonal renewal.
The contrast between the brilliant gold exterior and the subdued interior is particularly striking. Inside are two removable inner trays. The interior shows a nashiji finish; however, the current brownish tone appears to be the result of age-related discoloration rather than the original intended colour. The box can be appreciated both as a traditional writing box for calligraphy tools and as a storage box for letters or treasured personal items.
Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to produce intricate designs. Nashiji employs a similar method, using gold or silver flecks to achieve a pear skin-like texture, offering a unique shimmer and depth to the surface.
It is in vintage condition with age-related and use-related wear. There is paint loss to the corners and edges. The exterior and base show scuffs. There is one minor crack on the reverse side. The interior nashiji finish shows discoloration. The inner trays have scratches, slight paint loss, and small dents. Please refer to the photos for details.
