Artist Profile 宮﨑豊 Miyazaki Yutaka (1948–) was born in Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture in 1948 — the very heartland of Japan's celebrated folk pottery tradition. He trained at the Tochigi Prefectural Ceramics Guidance Center, where he studied both in the general and advanced research courses, and studied under the master potter Katori Ho. In 1974, he established his own kiln at its current location in Mashiko, and has since held solo and group exhibitions throughout Japan. Miyazaki is known primarily for his work in the zōgan (inlay) technique, in which contrasting clays or slips are pressed into incised designs on the vessel surface and then scraped smooth, creating patterns of quiet precision and depth against the warm Mashiko stoneware ground. This demanding technique, rooted in ancient ceramic traditions, requires exceptional skill and patience, and Miyazaki has devoted his career to its mastery within the living folk-craft tradition of Mashiko.
