A large Tokyo school bronze okimono depicting an elephant in motion with its trunk raised, a gesture traditionally interpreted as a sign of good fortune, wisdom, and prosperity. Particular attention is given to the details of the figure, evident in the rendering of the body, legs, ears, eyes, and trunk. Signed Gyokusui 玉水 on the underside. Weight: 5 kg. In Japanese art, the elephant (zō, 象) is an auspicious animal associated with strength, wisdom, and good fortune. Introduced through Buddhist culture, it also carries connotations of protection and spiritual discipline, making it a meaningful subject in decorative arts of the Edo and Meiji periods. Okimono (置物), combining the kanji "oki" (置き, to place) and "mono" (物, object), refers to a decorative object meant for display.
