An intriguing medium-sized six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) depicting scenes from The Tale of Genji 源氏物語 (Genji Monogatari).
The composition presents various episodes from the classical narrative, set within a landscape articulated by dense gold leaf clouds with dotted relief lines.
Along the lower left is a scene from chapter 20, Asagao 朝顔 (Bellflowers). Genji, after another unsuccessful attempt to court his cousin Princess Asagao, returns and spends time with Murasaki. They compose poetry while contemplating a winter scene with a frozen pond, and attendants playing in the snow.
In the upper centre appears a scene from chapter 7, Momiji no ga 紅葉賀 (An Imperial Celebration of Autumn Foliage), depicting a dance performance by Prince Genji and Tô no Chûjô, son of the Minister of the Left; known as “Waves of the Blue Sea.”
Additional vignettes from the tale are distributed across the panels, creating a lively and layered narrative composition.
Executed in colour and ink on gold leaf and mulberry paper. The painting is bordered by two silk brocade trims, a slender ecru inner band and a navy blue outer band. Set within a black lacquered wooden frame fitted with protective metal hardware.
