以《源氏物语》场景为图案的折屏风 - 漆木、纸、金箔 - 日本 - Meiji period (1868-1912)

An intricate tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) depicting scenes from The Tale of Genji 源氏物語 (Genji Monogatari). The composition presents three episodes from the classical narrative, set within a finely detailed landscape with blossoming cherry trees and pine, entwined with cascading wisteria, all enveloped by dense gold leaf clouds. At the centre is a scene from chapter 34, Wakana jô 若菜上 (Early Spring Greens, Part 1), offering a broad view of the Rokujô estate surrounded by spring blossoms. The Third Princess, Genji’s new wife, stands behind a reed curtain and is unexpectedly revealed when her cat’s leash catches and pulls it aside. Kashiwagi, son of Tô no Chûjô, who is nearby playing kemari (aristocratic kickball), catches a glimpse of her and becomes instantly captivated. Along the right is a scene from chapter 15, Yomogiu 蓬生 (The Wormwood Patch). Genji visits the Safflower Princess (Suetsumuhana 末摘花), who remained devoted to him during his exile. Her residence has fallen into disrepair, overgrown with wormwood, and barely recognisable. Moved by her loyalty, Genji later arranges for her to be cared for at his Rokujô residence. Executed in colour and ink on gold leaf and mulberry paper. The painting is bordered by two silk brocade trims, a slender ecru inner band and a black outer band. Set within a black lacquered wooden frame fitted with protective metal hardware. Period: Japan – Painting Meiji period (1868-1912) The protective frame was expertly refurbished at a later date in Japan, requiring highly specialised craftsmanship. Dimensions: Total width 374.2 cm (2 × 63.7 cm, 4 × 61.7 cm), Height 176.9 cm In very good condition considering its age, with wear consistent with age and restorations on both sides, including two restored areas in the gold leaf first 2 panels. Please refer to the photographs for a clear condition reference. The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art, but can of course also be placed as a standalone piece. When shipped, we will include a certificate of authenticity.
