A great combination specimen featuring hyalite opal coating on matrix with an associated smoky quartz crystal — note that the quartz crystal is on the reverse side of the specimen and has a damaged termination. The real star of this piece is the abundant hyalite opal, which under normal light appears as a glassy, colourless to pale botryoidal coating across the matrix surface. Under UV light the transformation is dramatic — intense neon green fluorescence, one of the most vivid natural fluorescence effects known in mineralogy. UV fluorescence photo included.
