Emile Gallé - 花瓶 - 罕见桦树穗单花花瓶,浮雕玻璃材质 - 尺寸 20.8 cm - 玻璃 - 新艺术运动,约1900年
A signed soliflore by Émile Gallé, this vase belongs to the naturalist phase of his late production, when botanical study and glassmaking were brought into especially close alignment. The long neck and flattened rounded body are executed in blown multi-layer glass, with the décor acid-etched in brown relief against a pink and green ground. A documented signed example of this exact 20.8 cm model is recorded with the same description of birch branches and catkins.
The birch-catkin motif is significant within Gallé’s work because it reflects the observational approach that distinguished him from more conventional decorative glass. Gallé was not only a designer and manufacturer, but also a trained botanist; the Musée de l’École de Nancy notes that nature occupied a dominant place in his work and that he served as secretary of the Société Centrale d’Horticulture de Nancy in 1877. In this context, the vase should be understood not simply as a floral ornament, but as part of Gallé’s broader attempt to translate specific plant life into Art Nouveau form.
Catkin subjects are documented in Gallé’s museum-held work from the final years of the nineteenth century. The Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon preserves a vase with catkins and magnolias dated circa 1898-1900, and its commentary emphasizes Gallé’s scientific attention to plant structure and his technical innovations in layered glass. That context is useful here: the present vase belongs to the same artistic moment, when Gallé favored precise seasonal plant motifs rendered through acid-etching and nuanced color transitions rather than heavier ornamental treatment.
Compared with Gallé’s more frequently encountered floral decors such as iris, clematis or magnolia, birch catkins appear much less often in publicly accessible market references. On that basis, this model can reasonably be presented as a scarcer and more specialized subject within the Gallé repertoire, especially in this elegant soliflore format and soft pink-green palette.
