“所有受苦者的安慰” (Богоматерь Всех Скорбящих Радость)
The icon corresponds to the Russian-type known as “The Virgin, joy/comfort of all the afflicted,” one of the most compassionate and social representations of Orthodox iconography.
Iconographic description
Central figure:
The Virgin Mary appears standing, intercessory, with hands open or pointing toward the needy. Her posture indicates that she listens and presents human suffering before God.
People around:
On both sides we see the poor, the sick, the disabled or afflicted, representing all the suffering humanity:
An elderly sick man
Injured or needy people
Figures seated in a posture of supplication
Angels:
They accompany the scene, assisting the needy, symbolizing the divine action that comes through Mary.
Upper left scene:
Christ usually appears in a medallion or cloud, indicating that it is He who grants grace, but through the intercession of His Mother.
Vegetal background (reeds or plants):
Evokes the earthly world, human fragility and, sometimes, the symbolism of life sprouting amid suffering.
Spiritual meaning
This icon expresses a central idea of Orthodox spirituality:
Mary as universal comfort
Refuge for those who suffer physically and spiritually
Active intercessor, not passive
It is not a majestic or enthroned Virgin, but someone close to human pain.
Very popular in Russia since the 17th century
Associated with miracles and healings
Highly venerated in contexts of illness, poverty or crisis
Interesting details include, we notice:
Slavic inscriptions (probably identifying the title)
Popular style (possibly 18th–19th centuries)
Quite narrative composition, typical of devotional icons more accessible to the people
