Fratelli Fanciullacci "Africa" Series Vase/Pitcher – Italy – 1950s/1960s
This stunning piece of Italian art pottery is a true icon of the Mid-Century Modern era. Produced in Montelupo, Italy, during the late 1950s or early 1960s, this large pitcher/vase is part of the highly sought-after "Africa" series. It is a centerpiece for any MCM, Bitossi, or Italian pottery collection.
Design Features:
Texture: It features the signature textured "volcanic" terracotta body, a hallmark of the Fanciullacci brothers' experimentation with raw materials.
Artistry: Decorated with beautiful hand-painted relief figures depicting a traditional scene.
Contrast: Features the classic contrast of the matte, earthy body against the glossy white glaze on the handle and rim.
The vase has a dynamic character, showing a deeper, richer body in indirect light, and coming to life with vibrant, glowing colors when placed in direct sunlight.
Markings: Signed at the bottom with "Italy 2825".
Condition Report:
The piece is in good vintage condition and displays beautifully.
There is some minor, age-appropriate wear to the white glaze on the handle.
Specifically, there is a noticeable, irregular chip/gap in the textured terracotta body at the base of the handle. Additionally, a small flake is missing from the edge of the spout, where the white glaze meets the terracotta. No structural cracks or restorations were found. The piece remains solid and is a true collector's item.
