Two Shell Fish Hooks – Santa Ana, Solomon Islands
A fine pair of traditional fish hooks carved from shell, originating from Santa Ana in the Solomon Islands. These hooks were expertly crafted for reef fishing, where precision, strength, and an understanding of marine life were essential.
Each hook displays elegant curvature and a smooth, lustrous surface, shaped from carefully selected shell material. The craftsmanship reflects a deep knowledge of both natural resources and fishing techniques passed down through generations.
Used in the shallow coastal waters and coral reefs surrounding Santa Ana, such hooks were highly effective tools and an integral part of daily subsistence. Their form is both functional and aesthetically refined.
A beautiful and evocative example of Oceanic material culture, increasingly scarce and highly desirable among collectors.

Alongside my passion for these unique cultural objects, I recently published my book Ik droomde dat je kwam, in which I describe personal encounters and experiences in Papua. The spirit of objects like this necklace lives on in those stories.
