This visually striking work was created by the prominent Japanese Western-style painter Hirosuke Tazaki in the 1960s–1970s.
Hirosuke Tazaki is best known for his depictions of volcanoes, Mount Fuji, and Mount Aso. He was a member of the Japan Art Academy (日本芸術院) and recipient of the Order of Culture (文化勲章), Japan’s highest cultural distinction.
This piece takes Japan’s iconic Mount Fuji and the rural scenery at its foot as its theme, reimagining the poetic spirit of traditional Japanese landscape painting through a highly expressive modern artistic language.
The majestic snow-capped summit of Mount Fuji dominates the upper half of the composition. Bold, expressive black-and-white brushstrokes define the mountain’s texture, vividly conveying the weight of snow and the imposing grandeur of the peak.
Beneath the mountain, scattered Japanese rural settlements are arranged along the water’s edge, with white walls and dark tiled roofs creating a peaceful pastoral atmosphere.
The foreground uses vigorous dark brown and deep green lines to depict fields and wooden fences, strengthening the work’s layered composition and sense of depth.
The sky features highly saturated contrasting colors of purple, orange, green, and white. Large blocks of intense pigment render a brilliant sunset glow, creating a strong “evening glow” atmosphere. This breaks from the subtle tone of traditional Japanese landscape painting, combining modern artistic sensibility with powerful visual impact.
The work bears an in-plate signature “H. TASAKI.” in the lower-left corner, with the edition number 45/250 marked in pencil (from a limited edition of 250). An artist’s red seal is stamped in the lower-right corner.
As the frame is sealed, detailed photographs of the back of the work cannot be taken.
The piece comes with its original ornate gilt frame, acrylic glazing, and white mat board. The frame shows minor signs of age-appropriate wear, including light rubbing, scratches, and small nicks. It is ready to hang without additional framing.
Due to its age, the work displays slight natural fading. Overall condition is good.
