Chinese Blue and White Porcelain Export Kendi, Probably Late Ming Dynasty, Wanli Period (1572–1620), Later European Metal Mounts Description A Chinese blue and white porcelain kendi of globular form with a short cylindrical neck and small side spout, decorated in underglaze cobalt blue with alternating floral sprays and geometric diaper panels contained within lobed reserves. The rounded body displays scrolling floral motifs and rosette medallions characteristic of late Ming export porcelain produced for Southeast Asian markets during the Wanli period (1572–1620). The vessel stands on a recessed base with an unglazed foot rim showing kiln grit and scattered iron specks consistent with traditional Ming-period firing techniques. Kendi of this type were widely produced in China for export to Southeast Asia and the Islamic world, where the form was used for pouring water or other liquids without direct contact with the mouth of the vessel. The neck and spout are fitted with later European metal mounts, likely added in the 19th century when Chinese porcelain vessels were often adapted for decorative or functional use in the West. Faint hairline below the metal rim. No further issues detected. Conditions of Sale By placing a bid, the buyer enters into a binding contract and agrees to the following terms: 1. Shipment, Delivery & Risk The seller’s delivery obligation is fulfilled once the lot has been transferred to a professional carrier for shipment to the delivery address provided through the Catawiki platform. Official carrier tracking records — including shipment acceptance, customs processing, delivery attempts, refusal notices, and delivery confirmation — constitute conclusive evidence of shipment progress and delivery attempts. Risk of loss or damage transfers to the buyer upon dispatch of the shipment. If the buyer elects to use a freight-forwarding company or third-party delivery intermediary, delivery shall be deemed completed once the parcel reaches the forwarding address. Any handling, storage, transport, or onward shipment beyond that point is entirely the buyer’s responsibility and risk. Claims of non-receipt that contradict official carrier tracking records will not invalidate the transaction. 2. Customs, Refusal & Contract Termination All import duties, VAT, customs clearance fees, brokerage charges, and related governmental assessments are solely the responsibility of the buyer. Refusal to accept delivery for any reason — including refusal by the buyer, refusal by a freight-forwarding service, failure to pay customs duties, failure to collect the parcel, or provision of an incorrect or incomplete address — constitutes voluntary refusal of delivery. In such cases: • the buyer remains responsible for all return shipping costs, storage fees, administrative charges, and carrier penalties • the seller is under no obligation to arrange a second shipment unless all additional shipping costs are paid in advance Any parcel returned to the seller due to refusal, non-payment of customs charges, non-collection, or delivery rejection remains entirely at the buyer’s risk and expense. 3. Condition & Description All lots are sold “as is” and “as photographed.” Photographs form part of the description and represent the visible condition of the object at the time of listing. Age-related wear, patina, oxidation, glaze variation, craquelure, firing marks, surface irregularities, minor losses, restorations, manufacturing variations, and material inconsistencies are inherent characteristics of antique, vintage, and collectible objects and do not constitute defects. The absence of reference to specific condition issues does not imply perfect condition. Unless expressly stated in writing, no warranty is made that any lot is free from restoration, repair, alteration, or replacement. 4. Attribution & Opinion Statements regarding age, origin, period, maker, material, cultural attribution, or historical context represent informed opinion based on experience and available research. Such statements are not guarantees or warranties. Differences in scholarly opinion, stylistic interpretation, market reassessment, or third-party evaluation do not constitute grounds for cancellation, dispute, or refund. 5. Packaging & Transit Risk Lots are packed carefully and professionally using appropriate protective materials. However, international transport always carries a residual risk of damage or breakage that cannot be eliminated entirely. By bidding, the buyer acknowledges and accepts this inherent transport risk. By placing a bid, the buyer confirms full acceptance of these Conditions of Sale.
