Set of four Belgian military decorations from the First and Second World Wars.
The group consists of:
-Victory Medal 1914–1918 with rainbow ribbon
- Commemorative Medal of the Campaign 1914–1918 (soldier’s profile)
- Commemorative War Medal 1940–1945
- Military Combatant’s Cross 1940–1945 (instituted in 1967)
The Victory Medal 1914–1918 is the Interallied Victory Medal awarded for service in the First World War. Established in 1919, this is the official Belgian issue designed by Paul Dubois.
The Commemorative Medal of the Campaign 1914–1918 was awarded to members of the Belgian Armed Forces as well as to foreign military personnel who served under Belgian command during the First World War.
The Commemorative War Medal 1940–1945 (French: Médaille Commémorative de la Guerre 1940–45, Dutch: Herinneringsmedaille van de Oorlog 1940–1945) was established by decree of the Regent on 16 February 1945. It was awarded to Belgian servicemen and women who served during the Second World War, as well as to members of the Belgian Resistance and the wartime Merchant Navy. Later provisions also allowed its award to foreign recipients of the Belgian Croix de Guerre.
The Military Combatant’s Cross 1940–1945 was awarded to personnel who saw active front-line service, including the “Free Belgians” who joined the Belgian Armed Forces in the United Kingdom after the fall of Belgium in 1940 and participated in the liberation of Europe.
All decorations are original and struck in bronze, each retaining its ribbon. Signs of age and wear are present, consistent with use; ribbons show some wear but remain complete.
A historically interesting and representative group of Belgian WWI and WWII decorations.
