This is a vase made of Yixing purple clay from China. It measures 31 cm in height, 8.5 cm in mouth diameter, 10.5 cm in base diameter, and 13-15 cm in belly diameter. The front and back feature a double-layered openwork carving technique, an extremely complex process that is very difficult to execute. One side depicts a phoenix searching among peonies, symbolizing "phoenix amidst peonies," while the other side shows a peacock foraging in a pine tree, symbolizing "everlasting green." The handles are made of two large lion heads.
