Northwest Asmat Shield – Field Collected in Irogo Village
A remarkable and authentic wooden shield from the Northwest Asmat region of West Papua, field collected in the remote village of Irogo.
This impressive piece represents the powerful carving traditions of the Asmat people, known for their bold forms and deep spiritual significance. The shield displays strong, expressive motifs, likely connected to ancestral protection and warrior identity. Its surface shows a rich patina consistent with age and traditional use, yet it remains in excellent condition.
Collected in situ by a German collector, this shield carries a solid provenance and reflects a period when such objects were still actively used within their cultural context.
A striking and important object for collectors of Oceanic art, ethnographic material, or tribal sculpture.
Condition: Excellent, with minor signs of age and handling
Origin: Irogo village, Northwest Asmat, West Papua (Indonesia)
Provenance: German private collection (field collected)
