Antique Araipatti silver belt, South India (Tamil Nadu), circa 1900, with rare screw clasp. This handcrafted belt is composed of multiple articulated silver panels, mounted on a finely woven silver band with alternating round, rectangular and floral elements. The panels are decorated with repoussé (chased) depictions of mythical creatures and floral motifs. The clasp features an unusual concealed screw mechanism beneath the central red stone, allowing the belt to be securely opened and closed. This type of construction is less commonly encountered and reflects skilled craftsmanship. Turn the red stone pin screw to the right to open the clasp.
