带有弁才天与寿老人的屏风 - 漆木、纸、金箔 - 日本 - Taishō period (1912-1926)
An impressive tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) depicting Benzaiten and Jurôjin aboard a boat.
The composition presents an auspicious variation on the takarabune 宝船 (treasure ship) theme, showing two of the Seven Lucky Gods 七福神 (Shichifukujin) emerging from behind a rock formation crowned by a large pine tree 松 (matsu).
A boat glides across the water, carrying Benzaiten 弁才天 and Jurôjin 寿老人. Benzaiten, clad in richly coloured robes, is shown seated while playing the biwa lute. Her hair is arranged in a refined updo, adorned with an elaborate phoenix crown. Her pale complexion is softly highlighted with delicate blush. Opposite her sits Jurôjin, sun browned skin, dressed in scholar’s robes and wearing a black cap with subtle ornamentation, listening attentively.
Executed in colour and ink on gold leaf, with details enriched in low-relief gofun (shell paste). The painting is bordered by a slender ecru inner band and a broad navy-blue outer band, and set within a black lacquered wooden frame fitted with protective gilt metal hardware.
Period:
Japan – Taishô period (1912–1926)
Dimensions:
Height 173 cm
Total width 377.2 cm (2 × 64.2 cm, 4 × 62.2 cm)
