Introduction
The Houghton Klito is a distinguished piece of British photographic engineering from the early 20th century. While most Klito models were box-style magazine cameras, this specific folding variant represents a more portable and professional evolution of the brand. Produced by Houghtons Ltd. in London, this folding plate camera features a high-quality German lens, highlighting the international trade in premium optics before the First World War. It is a quintessential "hand and stand" camera, designed to be used either on a tripod for careful compositions or held by hand for spontaneous street photography.
Key Benefits
Premium German Optics: Equipped with a renowned G. Rodenstock München Eurynar-Anastigmat lens, known for its superior sharpness and color correction.
Compact Folding Design: Offers a large plate format in a remarkably slim, portable leather-bound body when closed.
Versatile Adjustments: Includes rise and fall movements on the front standard, a critical feature for architectural and landscape photography.
Features
Camera Type: Folding Plate / Hand and Stand Camera.
Lens: G. Rodenstock München Eurynar-Anastigmat $1:6.8$ $f=16.5cm$ (Serial No. 144969).
Shutter: Dial-set shutter with speeds ranging from $1/25$ to $1/100$ plus B and T settings.
Focusing: Rack and pinion focusing via a side-mounted knob with a distance scale.
Viewfinder: Swiveling brilliant finder with an attached spirit level.
Bellows: Double-extension black leather bellows.
Back: Ground glass focusing screen with a protective folding hood.
Condition
Cosmetic: Rated 3/5. The camera shows significant signs of age and use. There is visible wear and "red rot" on the leatherette covering, particularly on the edges and the folding bed. The leather handle is intact but fragile.
Optics: The lens appears relatively clear for its age, though some internal haze and dust are present. The brilliant finder is functional but shows age-related dimness.
Mechanical: The folding mechanism and rack-and-pinion focusing operate smoothly. The shutter fires, though speeds have not been electronically tested for accuracy. The bellows appear intact but should be checked for light-tightness if intended for use.
Note: Sold as a collectible/display item due to its age and cosmetic wear.
What’s Included
Houghton Klito Folding Plate Camera.
Integrated Ground Glass Focusing Back with Hood.
Why This Product?
For the collector of British cameras or fans of the Rodenstock legacy, this Houghton Klito is a rewarding find. Its combination of London-built craftsmanship and Munich-engineered optics makes it a fascinating historical crossover. Despite its weathered exterior, it possesses a rugged, "experienced" aesthetic that tells a century-old story of photographic exploration.
