展示架饰以珍珠母纹样,华丽装饰。 - 木, 珍珠母, 漆 - 日本 - Meiji period (1868-1912)

A black-lacquered kazari-dana 飾り棚 (display cabinet) extravagantly decorated with colourful mother-of-pearl inlaid motifs on all front panels, and to a lesser extent on the sides. Fully cleaned and restored. The cabinet is built with an open frame and a combination of sliding doors, hinged doors and two layers of three adjacent drawers each along the bottom. Panels show various (temple) garden scenes, as well as camellia and bamboo motifs. Aside from its highly decorative design suitable for display of ikebana, ceramics or other pieces, the cabinet offers ample actual storage space for for example writing utensils, letters and documents, and so on. Back in the day it would have made an excellent central eyecatcher in an otherwise understated washitsu 和室 (Japanese style tatami room), and is ready to now shine again in a, perhaps, Western setting. This kind of decorative mother of pearl cabinets usually originate from the Ryûkyû islands (nowadays Okinawa) where (South-)East Asian influences converged. Period: Japan – Meiji period (1868-1912) Dimensions: Height 94 cm, Width 81.5 cm, Depth 33 cm. Considering its age the cabinet is in excellent restored condition, including some signs of wear conform its age, and some losses of inlay. Please see the photos for a condition reference. When shipped, we will add a certificate of authenticity.
