清水一二 Shimizu Ichiji (1961– ) - 碗 - 石器 - Tamba 波浪边石陶瓷

Item Description: 清水一二 Shimizu Ichiji (1961– ) A beautiful stoneware serving dish by 清水一二 Shimizu Ichiji, one of the most accomplished contemporary potters working in the Tamba (丹波) tradition of Hyogo Prefecture — one of Japan's celebrated Six Ancient Kilns. This shallow footed dish features a distinctively undulating, cloud-like rim that ripples organically around the entire circumference, a hallmark of the artist's refined yet earthy aesthetic. The body is hand-thrown and wheel-formed from dark Tamba clay, with the exterior displaying a richly layered surface of ash-grey, pale mauve and sandy tones achieved through natural ash glaze firing. The inner surface is glazed in a luminous celadon-grey-green, the spontaneous pooling and matte brown speckles across the bowl revealing the dynamic interaction of glaze and fire characteristic of authentic wood-kiln Tamba ware. Visible throwing lines spiral into the center of the bowl, adding a meditative rhythm to the piece. The unglazed base bears a small impressed seal mark of the artist. Presented in its original signed wooden box (共箱 / tomobako), which is inscribed "丹波 菓子鉢" (Tamba Confectionery Bowl), confirming its intended use in the Japanese tea ceremony as a vessel for serving sweets. A work of quiet elegance perfectly suited to both the tea room and the contemporary table. Size Height: 7.5 cm Width: 22 cm Depth: 22 cm Weight: 858 g Condition This piece is in very good overall condition with no chips, cracks, or restoration; minor age-related dust and natural glaze variations consistent with wood-kiln firing are present. Artist Profile 清水一二 Shimizu Ichiji (1961– ) was born in Tachikui, Tamba, Hyogo Prefecture — the historic heartland of Tamba ware, one of Japan's Six Ancient Kilns — and has worked as a ceramicist in the same region ever since. After graduating from Osaka University of Economics in 1984, he trained under masters of Tamba, Seto, and Bizen traditions before establishing his own kiln. He is a member of the Japan Kogei Association (日本工芸会正会員), the Hyogo Prefecture Craft and Fine Arts Association, and the Japan Ceramic Art Association. His works have been selected for the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition, the Japan Ceramics Exhibition, and the prestigious Tabe Museum "Tea Ceremony Ceramics" Exhibition.
