A ceremonial leather ornament acquired in Kenya in the 1990s, now in a Dutch private collection. The piece is characteristic of East African tribal adornment traditions and combines multiple materials in a single elaborate composition.
The base is constructed from dark tanned leather with a shaped shoulder or neck strap for wearing. The lower section features a dense fringe of leather strips threaded with metal tubes and rods, creating a rhythmic rattling movement during dance or ceremony, a deliberate acoustic element common in East African ceremonial dress. Three cowrie shells are mounted on the leather ground, each a powerful symbol of fertility, protection and wealth across the African continent. Turquoise blue beaded panels in geometric patterns add colour contrast, and a central carved pendant (bone or hardwood) displays an engraved diamond geometric motif.
The piece shows honest age-related wear throughout: the leather is darkened and peels a bit in places, the metal rods show oxidation, and the beadwork has minor losses consistent with decades of storage. These characteristics support the authenticity of the piece.
