千手观音三尊 - 漆木 - 日本 - 江户时代,18世纪
A impressive carved lacquered wood figure depicting a triad centred on Senju Kannon 千手観音 (Thousand-Armed Kannon), flanked by Fudô Myô-ô 不動明王 and Bishamonten 毘沙門天.
The multi-armed deity stands in calm dignity upon a lotus pedestal rising from rugged, naturalistic rockwork. The principal hands are joined in prayer (gasshô), while the remaining arms radiate behind, originally holding various attributes. The serene expression is framed by a high topknot, centred with a small image of Amida Nyorai 阿弥陀如来 set within the crown.
Behind Kannon rises an elaborate flaming mandorla 光背 (kôhai), carved in bold, swirling forms with curling clouds and tongues of flame. The two flanking figures stand slightly forward, each backed by a similarly carved aureole, forming a dynamic yet balanced composition.
To the left stands Fudô Myô-ô, the Immovable King of Light, holding a vajra sword to cut through ignorance and a noose to subdue and guide beings. To the right stands Bishamonten, guardian of the north, depicted holding a trident and a small pagoda, symbolising authority and protection. Together they reinforce both spiritual and worldly protection, centring the composition around Kannon’s compassionate presence.
Carved in wood and finished in lacquer, with remnants of original gilding.
