Item Description
A supremely refined Japanese lacquerware three-tiered jubako (重箱, stacking box set), executed in authentic urushi lacquer on natural wood (ki-ji) and decorated overall with dense gold maki-e in a design of delicate fern and trailing botanical fronds.
This is a piece of genuine quality: the base label confirms authentic urushi lacquer surface coating on natural wood substrate, the hallmarks of traditional Japanese lacquerware craftsmanship.
The exterior presents a breathtaking all-over (so-maki-e) pattern of feathery fern fronds in gold against a deep, lustrous ground in tame-nuri — a rich burgundy-black tone achieved through layering translucent lacquer over red, one of the most prestigious and technically demanding finishes in the Japanese lacquer tradition.
In certain lights the ground shifts between deep black and dark wine-red, giving the gold decoration an extraordinary luminosity.
The motif — fine botanical sprays rendered with meticulous delicacy across every surface — has the quality of a textile pattern translated into lacquer, with no two panels identical in their natural, asymmetric arrangement.
The interior of each tier is finished in vivid vermillion red lacquer (shu-nuri), brilliant and unblemished — confirming that this set has never been used. All three tiers separate independently, and the lid is a separate piece, making the set fully versatile for serving or display.
The box carries a label reading "木製 6.5三段重 溜 信夫" — identifying this as a 6.5-sun (approximately 19.7 cm) three-tiered wood-base jubako, by the craftsman Nobuo. A further gold quality label on the underside certifies the materials under Japanese household goods labelling law (承認番号 SK-HS-0002). Comes in its original storage box. Unused, in mint condition.
