A large carved granite garden ornament in the form of a frog 蛙 (kaeru) with stylized rounded form. The stone is carved from mottled white and grey granite. Dimensions: Height 24 cm, width 31.5 cm, depth 22.5 cm. Weight 19.6 kg. The age of stone garden ornaments can be difficult to determine precisely. This example is likely Showa period (1926-1989). In Japan, the frog (kaeru) is associated with fertility and good fortune. As the word kaeru also means “to return,” the frog is considered an auspicious symbol for safe return and the coming back of good things.
