In Noh theatre, Shakumi represents a middle-aged woman marked by deep sorrow and hardship. It is chiefly associated with kyojo-mono, or “madwoman” plays, such as Hyakuman and Sumidagawa, in which a mother driven to madness by the loss of her child appears on stage. The slightly protruding lower jaw, which is said to give the mask its name, contributes to its distinctive expression. Its restrained yet emotionally charged features convey profound grief and lingering anguish. The mask is finely hand-carved from wood and finished with traditional gofun (oyster shell pigment), giving the surface its refined pale appearance. The reverse retains clear chisel marks that reflect the craftsmanship involved. A carved seal of the artist Motoyasu (基安) is present, and the reverse is also inscribed in gold with the title of the mask. There are additional faint characters that appear to be a name, but they are too worn to read with certainty. An elegant brocade bag with floral decoration is included. The cloth label on the bag reads Takai, which is likely the name of a previous owner or collector. Purple cords are attached to the mask. The condition is consistent with age and use. The front shows overall yellowing, along with minor scratches and dirt. There is wear and small paint losses around the eye openings and cord holes. The reverse has old tape residue, with some remaining adhesive and slight stickiness. The brocade bag shows overall yellowing and stains, and the fabric has noticeable tears and fraying. Please refer to the photos for details. Dimensions: approx.
