支架 - 木, 漆、蒔絵、金梨地、金粉、 - 日本 - Edo Period (1600-1868) - Sakazukidai 【杯台】

This refined Maki-e Sakazukidai【盃台】 from the Edo period is an excellent example of traditional Japanese lacquer artistry. Bearing the signature of Kokubun Hachiuemon (as indicated on the wooden storage box), this piece reflects the refined craftsmanship and artistic sensibility of its time. The surface is adorned with auspicious motifs of reishi (sacred fungus), bats, and flowing clouds, executed in heavy gold maki-e (atsu-kin maki-e) and set against a rich kin-nashiji (gold-sprinkled lacquer ground). These motifs are considered high-ranking auspicious symbols, representing longevity, fortune, and good omen, and were traditionally associated with objects of elevated status. The use of heavy gold maki-e creates a powerful and luxurious presence, while the finely applied kin-nashiji enhances depth and brilliance across the surface. The piece is entirely handcrafted by skilled artisans using traditional techniques. As a sakazukidai (sake cup stand), it was originally used in formal and ceremonial settings, symbolizing status and refined taste. The Edo period was a time when lacquer artistry reached a high level of technical and aesthetic refinement, and this work reflects the exceptional standards of that era.
