Antique Dutch Silver Box – P. Kruyt, Schoonhoven (1842–1863) – 833 Silver – Biedermeier Period
An elegant antique Dutch silver box crafted in the mid-19th century during the Biedermeier period. This finely worked piece bears the Dutch lion hallmark indicating 2 = 833 silver purity, along with the maker’s mark “KR” above “74” in a rectangular cartouche, attributed to the silversmith P. Kruyt, active in Schoonhoven between 1842 and 1863.
The box features a beautifully shaped, scalloped form with a hinged lid. The top is decorated with delicate engraved scrollwork and ornamental motifs characteristic of the Biedermeier aesthetic—refined, symmetrical, and understatedly elegant. The edges are richly contoured, adding depth and tactile appeal.
Inside, the box has a smooth, plain finish, contrasting with the decorative exterior. The craftsmanship is solid and functional, with a well-operating hinge.
Good antique condition with age-related wear, light surface scratches, and minor signs of use consistent with its age. Interior shows natural patina.
Dimensions approx. 2cm height x 5,5cm x 4,5cm
Weight approx. 25 gram.
Originally intended as a small personal container, this box could have been used to store snuff, pills, small valuables, or keepsakes. Today, it serves equally well as a decorative collectible, a display object, or a refined storage piece for jewelry or small treasures.
A charming example of 19th-century Dutch silverwork, ideal for collectors of antique silver or as an elegant accent piece in both classic and modern interiors.
