Niello is an ancient decorative technique where a black metallic alloy is inlaid into engraved metal surfaces. This technique gained significant popularity in Russia during the 19th century, particularly for decorating silver items like cigarette cases, boxes, and tableware. Russian niello silver is renowned for its intricate patterns, often featuring floral motifs, architectural scenes, or traditional Russian designs, set against a contrasting black background.

During the late 19th century, Russian silversmiths produced a vast array of niello silver objects, many of which were exported and are now highly collectible. The craftsmanship involved in niello work requires great skill, as the alloy must be precisely applied and polished to achieve a smooth, lustrous finish. The combination of the silver's gleam and the niello's deep black creates a striking visual effect that has endured through time.
