A cylindrical Satsuma ceramic vase, finely decorated and painted with polychrome enamels and pure gold. The two reserves depict, on one side, a scene of everyday life with geisha and karako children, while on the other side a rooster and a hen are portrayed. The reserves are framed by elegant geometric motifs that harmoniously separate the scenes. Signed Kozan under the base. Satsuma ware is one of the finest expressions of Japanese ceramics. Originating from the ancient province of Satsuma (now Kagoshima), it was produced as early as the Edo period (1603–1868) using low-temperature firing, which gives it the characteristic surface with craquelure and vibrant decorations. ---The vase is in good condition, with minor wear consistent with age.
