Suzuki Kiitsu (1796 – 1858) was a Japanese painter of the Rinpa school. He was a student of the famous painter Sakai Hoitsu (1761–1828). In recent years his work has been reevaluated and gained recognition. Suzuki was born in a townhouse in Edo where the family business was purple dyeing. Sakai Hoitsu recognized his artistic talent in the 10th year of Bunka and he became his apprentice. Around the age of 40, he escaped from his master's style and formed his own world with his unique sense of color and form, eccentric ideas and bold composition. While sharing the slightly decadent sentiments of the citizens of Edo at the end of the Tokugawa shogunate, his works, which aim for a new harmony between realistic depiction of nature and decorativeness, also have fresh contents that are connected to Meiji-period Japanese paintings. He was also a notable master with many pupils. Although he was not the official successor of Hoitsu's school, he trained himself many of the Edo Rinpa artists. This has sometimes been labeled as the Kiitsu school of Edo Rinpa.
