A refined and highly artistic iron tsuba (samurai sword guard) from the Edo period, masterfully decorated with intricate gold and silver inlay.
This piece features a dynamic twin dragon (Sōryū) motif, including a striking rain dragon (Uryū) rendered with exceptional detail. The surface is richly adorned with karakusa (arabesque) patterns, geometric borders, and auspicious motifs such as treasure symbols and mallet-like forms, all executed in delicate inlay work.
The openwork design (sukashi) with dual hitsu-ana and a robust kaku-mimi (square rim) construction reflects both functionality and refined aesthetics, typical of high-quality sword fittings.
Over time, the silver inlay has partially worn, particularly on one dragon, revealing a beautiful patina that enhances the authenticity and historical depth of the piece. The iron surface shows natural aging, oxidation, and areas of inlay loss—clear indicators of genuine age rather than reproduction.
When lightly tapped, the tsuba produces a clear, high-pitched metallic tone, a characteristic often appreciated by collectors as a sign of well-forged iron.
This is not merely a sword fitting, but a compact work of art embodying Japanese craftsmanship and symbolism.
