-> The decorative scheme is commonly interpreted as representing the Five Wounds of Christ: the central boss symbolising the wound to Christ’s side, and the four surrounding bosses representing the wounds to the hands and feet. This symbolic motif is known in early medieval Christian art and is often associated with protective and devotional meanings, particularly in personal amuletic objects.
