Fedoskino School. Unique vintage russian box from the town of Palekh, made of papier-mâché and hand-painted and lacquered. On the box is inscribed 'Palekh Poedinok HA', meaning the town of Palekh, the title of the painting 'The Duel (Poedinok)', and the artist who created the box, namely Nikolai Adamov (H.A). The painting technique involves egg-based tempera and finishing with gold leaf. The Duel suggests a scene from a Russian fairy tale or a historical epic (bylina), often depicting the fight between two knights (bogatyri). The piece was created sometime between 1970—1980 by Nikolai Adamov, who was a well-known master in the Palekh workshops, active especially in the second half of the 20th century. He is appreciated for the precision of his details and the way he uses gold for decoration to highlight the armors, horse tack, and landscape elements. The box measures 13 / 8 / 3.1 cm and weighs 121 grams.
