Item Description
MIYABI Japanese Maki-e Lacquer Folding Screen Clock — Yamanaka Lacquerware | Bamboo & Swallow Design | Signed | Japan
An exquisite decorative table clock in the form of a folding screen (byobu), crafted in the celebrated tradition of Yamanaka Lacquerware (山中漆器) from Kaga City, Ishikawa Prefecture — one of Japan's foremost lacquerware-producing regions and a designated centre of traditional craft.
The MIYABI (雅 — meaning "elegance" or "courtly refinement") line represents the signature series of Yamanaka's screen clock collection, designed to bring classical Japanese aesthetic sensibility into the contemporary interior. The three-panel folding form itself is a direct reference to the traditional Japanese byobu screen, an art form with a history spanning over a millennium, used to divide space and display seasonal imagery in the homes of aristocrats and samurai.
The surface decoration depicts a serene bamboo grove under a moonlit sky, with graceful swallows in flight — a quintessential motif of Japanese classical painting, evoking resilience (the bamboo that bends but does not break), purity, and the ephemeral beauty of the natural world. The maki-e style gold-on-black decoration is executed with exceptional fineness: delicate gold line-work renders individual bamboo stalks and leaves with meticulous precision, while scattered gold dust (kirikane-like sprinkling) suggests a mist or moonlit atmosphere behind the grove. An artist's signature and red seal (rakkan) are visible on the lower portion of the panel — a mark of artistic authorship rare in production lacquerware of this type.
The clock face is set into the central panel: an ivory-toned dial with Roman numerals, gold-tone hands, and the brand name "MIYABI QUARTZ" printed beneath the centre. The movement is a reliable Japanese quartz calibre powered by a single AA (size: single-sango / 単三) battery. The clock folds flat for storage and display. The battery will be removed for shipping.
The reverse side shows the clean black lacquer base finish with some light wear consistent with normal use.
