A Bizen ceramic sculpture worked to imitate wood, depicting the goddess Kannon standing and holding a basket of fish in her hands.
Kannon (観音), the goddess of mercy and compassion, is one of the most venerated Buddhist deities in Japan. She is regarded as the protector of mankind and is ever ready to hear the prayers of all who call upon her.
Okimono (置物), combining the kanji "oki" (置き, to place) and "mono" (物, object), refers to a decorative object meant for display. Okimono, popular in the Meiji period (1868 - 1912), were finely crafted sculptures made from materials such as ivory, boxwood, wood, and bronze.
