The history of the houndstooth pattern (also known as houndstooth, pied-de-poule, or dog's foot) is a fascinating journey from the practical attire of Scottish shepherds to an icon of luxury and high fashion.
Houndstooth originated in the Scottish Lowlands, where it was originally made of wool and woven by shepherds. The first forms of this pattern date back to between 360 BC and 100 AD, making it one of the oldest tartans. Unlike traditional clan tartans, houndstooth was considered a "border" pattern, or worn by those outside a specific clan.
