古董日本砚箱/船箪笥(挂砚)柜 - 明治时期,带日期铭文 - 木 - 日本 - Meiji period (1868-1912)

Item Title Antique Japanese Suzuri-bako/Funa-tansu (Kake-suzuri) Chest - Meiji Period, Dated Inscriptions Item Description This is a beautiful and functional piece of Japanese history. It is a rare Kake-suzuri (hanging inkstone box), also known as a Funa-tansu (ship's captain's chest), dating back to the Meiji Period. Crafted from richly grained, reddish-brown lacquered wood. It is heavily adorned with elaborate black forged iron hardware (kanagu). The hardware includes corner guards, hinge plates, and decorative brackets, all secured with iron studs. A prominent C-shaped iron handle is mounted on the lid for easy carrying. This chest is a perfect example of traditional Japanese functional art. Historical Details & Provenance Each piece comes with a unique, documented history inscribed directly onto its drawers. Inside, there are two distinct dates written in Japanese ink. The earliest date, now partially faded, is from the Meiji Period (1868-1912). We can assume this was written by the very first owner when they acquired the chest. Another date, written more clearly, is from the Showa Period. This suggests a second owner took possession of the item and, following a common Japanese custom that persisted until the mid-Showa era, inscribed the date they received it. Documentation provides a direct link to the multiple hands that have treasured this item over the last century and a half. Condition, Functionality, and Dimensions Exceptional antique condition is maintained in this chest, which preserves its solid structure and beautiful patina. Minor signs of wear and tear exist as expected with an authentic item of this age, which only add to its character. The lower drawers operate smoothly. However, the mechanism for the upper door has become stiff over time due to age. To open the upper door, you must press the circular latch button firmly while opening. Dimensions (Approx.): 21 cm x 22 cm x 30 cm (approx. 8.3 x 8.7 x 11.8 inches) Weight: Approx. 3 kg (approx. 6.6 lbs) Such a Kake-suzuri is a perfect size for a desk-side organizer, a jewelry box, or a unique conversation piece in any living space. Background Crafting these types of chests, Kake-suzuri, was a highly specialized craft. These chests were primarily made for ship owners, captains, and merchants during the Edo and Meiji periods in Japan. Artisans designed them to hold important documents, inkstones, and funds during long and often treacherous voyages. Builders had to construct them with extreme durability, often featuring reinforced joinery, heavy iron protection, and sophisticated locking mechanisms (as seen in the large circular lock plate on the front). Most were crafted by anonymous, master woodworkers and blacksmiths working in specific regions famous for their metalwork and lacquering, such as Sado Island or the Noto Peninsula. The specific maker of this particular piece is unknown, which is typical for items of this origin, but the quality of the ironwork and joinery speaks to the skill of a dedicated craftsman.
