一件木雕作品 - 鲍勒 - 象牙海岸 (没有保留价)

This male figure from the Beomi region of Ivory Coast is situated within the cultural context of the Baule people, a society whose sculptural traditions are characterized by a pronounced connection between aesthetic ideals, social coding, and spiritual significance. Baule figures often serve as vehicles for complex notions of identity, status, and supernatural relationships, particularly in connection with blolo concepts or personal figures of protection and representation. The upright figure is oriented frontally and displays a subtle, upward tilt of the head, lending it a ethereal yet dignified presence. A crown-like halo of hair frames the face, the forehead of which is structured by grooved ornamentation. Strongly defined eyebrows flow seamlessly into a narrow, finely sculpted nose, while the closed mouth and open eyes create a calm, controlled tension. The neck, chest, and back are rhythmically articulated by scar-like ridges that allude to culturally coded body markings. The arms held close to the sides and the rope-like ornamentation around the neck and hips emphasize the figure's vertical unity. The anatomically differentiated torso, with its detailed chest, navel, hips, knees, and feet, as well as the depiction of the male genitalia, underscores an idealized yet realistic conception of the body. The glossy patina and visible signs of wear point to a long history of use and its integration into ritual or domestic contexts. In its formal balance between naturalism and stylization, the figure embodies an aesthetic ideal that unites body, identity, and spiritual presence. Literature (Selection) Vogel, Susan Mullin: Baule: African Art, Western Eyes. New Haven, 1997. Cole, Herbert M.: Icons: Ideals and Power in the Art of Africa. Washington, 1989. Fischer, Eberhard: African Art. Munich, 2006. CAB47265
