Created in August 1987 (Showa 62) by Ishizu Gyokushū of the Kodai Bijutsuhin Seisakusho (Ancient Art Production Studio), the mask is executed in the shin kanshitsu (dry lacquer) technique and designed as a wall hanging. The mask is distinguished by its implanted hemp fibre eyebrows, moustache, and long flowing beard, giving the face a dignified and animated presence. The softly smiling expression, deeply carved wrinkles, and serene features embody the spiritual and celebratory nature of Okina. Within the world of Noh theatre, the performance known as “Okina” occupies a unique and sacred position. Unlike standard dramatic Noh plays, it is regarded as a ritual performance praying for peace, national prosperity, safety, and abundant harvests. Because of this, Okina masks have long been associated with good fortune, longevity, purification, and blessings for auspicious occasions. The reverse bears a handwritten washi paper label with seal, inscribed “Showa 62, Auspicious Day in August – Commemorating a Wedding Celebration.” A hanging cord is attached, allowing the mask to be displayed immediately as a wall decoration. The lot includes explanatory documents and its original paper storage box. The mask remains in good vintage condition with minor blemishes and age-related wear. Some slight marks, rubbing, and natural ageing are present. Please refer to the photos for details. Dimensions: approx.
